CELF Summer Institute Strategies
Through an intensive first two days of presentations, exercises, discussions, and reflection, participants will gain content knowledge in sustainability and systems thinking.
Participants will select from a choice of break-out sessions by topic and grade level for deeper learning of subject content. Afternoon curriculum connection work will emphasize strategies to develop transferable skills in areas such as thinking and learning, self-management, communication, group work and information management.
Throughout the second half of the week, teachers will receive individual coaching and instructional resources as they create "makeovers" for units or courses. Instructional design is guided with a unit design framework* that helps teachers:
- reframe instruction around compelling "Big Ideas" guiding questions
- present content within the environmental, economic, and cultural contexts shaping students' lives
- use questioning strategies to promote critical thinking
- support literacy and writing skills through content instruction
- design and use assessments that have a real audience and purpose
In a supportive and stimulating environment, workshop members will reflect on their own roles in enhancing K-12 education through Sustainability Education. Readings and materials will also be provided.
