CELF Summer Institute Presenters
Susan Santone
Ms. Santone is the founder and Executive Director of Creative Change Educational Solutions.
Ms. Santone has developed comprehensive curricula for all grade levels on sustainability, and partnered with universities and nonprofits to lead sustainability education initiatives at the state and national levels. She has advised local school districts, and consulted to the United Nations, Purdue University and the Center for Sustainable Community Development at the University of Minnesota, among others. Ms. Santone also advised public television station WGBH Boston on creation of children's media on sustainability.
She has developed curricula/units on human rights and anti-discrimination; land use, the environment, and sustainability; brownfields redevelopment and renewable energy. She created "Designed by Nature," an interdisciplinary curriculum on the science and economics of green design. All programs have been piloted and evaluated in classrooms across the country, with evaluations demonstrating positive impact on students and teachers.
Ms. Santone leads workshops on teaching sustainability and ecological economics at national conferences, including the North American Association of Environmental Education, the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, Bioneers, and state-level associations for science and social studies educators. Her writing and work has appeared in numerous professional journals.
Scott Beall
Mr. Beall is a teacher, lecturer, author and international education consultant. He received his masters degree in mathematics education from Stanford University with an emphasis in interdisciplinary curriculum and education reform. His first book, Functional Melodies—Finding Mathematical Relationships In Music (Key Curriculum Press, 2000) integrates the teaching of mathematics and music and is used by teachers and students worldwide.
Mr. Beall's curricular focus is in project-based interdisciplinary designs that utilize systems thinking and community-based learning in themes of sustainable development, entrepreneurialism and social responsibility. He has consulted and lectured in school districts and universities from Central America to Kazakhstan, and has taught extensively and developed programs for secondary, middle, and elementary school levels. Mr. Beall is also an adjunct professor at the College of New Rochelle Graduate School of Education, the enrichment teacher for the Brewster Central Schools in Brewster, New York, and has co-designed and taught the CELF Summer Institute for Sustainability Education for the past three years.
Melissa Billings
Ms. Billings is an elementary school teacher in the Chappaqua Central School District. She is a district wide trainer for teachers and parents for the character education program, "TLC", and teacher-designer for Putnam/Northern Westchester BOCES' Science 21curriculum. As a past participant of the CELF Summer Institute, Ms. Billings utilizes systems thinking and sustainability, integrating these concepts
throughout her curricula and classroom.
Rachel Gutter
As the School Sector Manager for the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), Rachel Gutter works on a national level to promote and facilitate the construction of high performance, green schools. She oversees USGBC's National Green School Campaign as well as the LEED for Schools Green Building Rating System®, USGBC's market-specific guidelines that recognize the unique nature and educational aspects of the design and construction of K-12 educational facilities. Rachel presents at conferences and conventions around the country, educating stakeholders and the public on the value of building sustainable schools.
Rachel's recent experience in the fields of green building consulting and high performance educational design includes her work with the Green Building Program of Montgomery County Public Schools – one of the only school systems in the country to mandate green school construction. Rachel has six years of teaching experience and K-12 curriculum development. Rachel received her Bachelor of Arts from Tufts University.
Rosi Kerr
Ms. Kerr is an Energy Advisor for Juice Energy, Inc.. Her work in the energy space began with community-based, distributed electricity generation projects. Before joining Juice as an Energy Advisor, Rosi founded a company to transform fish offal from processing plants into environmentally friendly, low emissions fuel to power diesel electricity generators in remote Alaskan communities. Rosi has worked extensively on community development projects, and in environmental education, communication and outreach. She specializes in developing and implementing market-driven, creative solutions to environmental problems.
Ms. Kerr is a graduate of Dartmouth College with a B.A. in English Literature and Environmental Biology. She has a Master's Degree in Environmental Science from the Yale University School of Forestry and Environmental Studies.
