CELF brings leading Professional Development and Curriculum Enhancement workshops to K-12 educators. The annual CELF Summer Institute is designed to provide the technical and scientific background, the curriculum framework and materials necessary for integrating sustainability education into K-12 schools.

CELF’s Summer Institute uses top experts and proven programs in Sustainability Education and Systems Thinking in order to:

  • The CELF 2008 Summer Institute for Sustainability Education is an intensive collaborative learning experience designed to build a community of K-12 educators who are sustainability education leaders and practioners.
  • The 2008 Institute will feature focused strands for grades K-5, 6-8 and 9-12. Educators will work specifically on integrating sustainability content and themes into existing math, social studies, science and ELA curriculum.
  • Presenters: Susan Santone, Director of Creative Change Educational Solutions; Scott Beall, Director of Integral Learning Systems; Melissa Billings, Chappaqua School District Elementary School teacher, district trainer and Science 21 designer for Putnam/Northern Westchester BOCES; as well as content experts from related fields such as:
    • green building and ecological design
    • energy
    • climate change
  • Program evaluation continues throughout the year to focus on the Institute's impacts on student achievement and teachers' professional growth. Stipends for participation in program assessment are available.
  • The 2008 Institute is co-sponsored and hosted by Manhattanville College - School of Education, at its Purchase, NY campus.
  • The course is eligible for 2 in-service credits OR 3 graduate school credits.

IMPLEMENTATION SUPPORT

  • CELF offers on-going support to teachers to help implement the ideas generated from the workshops via CELF’s Teacher Advisory Board, professional consultants from organizations engaged to lead workshops and the interactive Teacher Chatroom on the CELF website
  • CELF Summer Institute provides teachers with relevant benchmarking and assessment tools
