INTRODUCTION TO SUSTAINABILITY EDUCATION SEMINARS

CELF offers half-day and full-day programs to explore Sustainability Education (SE), learn how it improves student learning and achievement, increases student involvement, and how schools have successfully implemented SE within their existing programs.

ANNUAL CELF SUMMER INSTITUTE FOR SUSTAINABILITY EDUCATION:

July 21-28, 2008, limited to Scarsdale and Portchester Schools

  • The CELF 2008 Summer Institute for Sustainability Education is an intensive collaborative learning experience designed to build a community of K-12 educators who are sustainability education leaders and practioners.
  • The 2008 Institute will feature focused strands for grades K-5, 6-8 and 9-12. Educators will work specifically on integrating sustainability content and themes into existing math, social studies, science and ELA curriculum.
  • Presenters: Susan Santone, Director of Creative Change Educational Solutions; Scott Beall, Director of Integral Learning Systems; Melissa Billings, Chappaqua School District Elementary School teacher, district trainer and Science 21 designer for Putnam/Northern Westchester BOCES; as well as content experts from related fields such as:
    • green building and ecological design
    • energy
    • climate change
  • Program evaluation continues throughout the year to focus on the Institute's impacts on student achievement and teachers' professional growth. Stipends for participation in program assessment are available.
  • The 2008 Institute is co-sponsored and hosted by Manhattanville College - School of Education, at its Purchase, NY campus.
  • The course is eligible for 2 in-service credits OR 3 graduate school credits.

A Middle School Workshop for Science & Social Studies Teachers

July 10-11, 2008 Manhattanville College, presented by Susan Santone, Director of Creative Change Educational Solutions and Katie Ginsberg, Executive Director of CELF. This course is offered for one in-service credit.

 

SCHOOL CELF EVALUATION :

  • Sustainability Curriculum Audit - A guided inventory tool that invites, yet challenges constituents from different roles in the district to work together with an SE Facilitator to reflect, build capacity, and develop a plan for action.
  • World Cafe - An in-school forum where participants gather to discuss ideas, clarify the context, explore questions that matter, connect diverse perspectives, encourage each person’s contribution, listen together for patterns, insights and deeper questions, and share collective discoveries.

Wednesday, April 30, 2008 at Pace University, Pleasantville, New York

  • Features participating corporations' creative and innovative sustainable and ecological practices. The goal of the EXPO is to ignite student interest in studying and pursuing career paths that promote a sustainable future.
  • Showcases student work in related areas of study
  • Exposes whole communities to a variety of green practices and leaders across fields of sustainable development.

Understanding the deep chemistry of the products we use each day is critical to evaluate the impact a product may have on human health and the environment in which we live. Join us for a program that looks at how to make a positive difference on the environment by the choices you make each day. Learn how materials - from the selection process through manufacturing - can be a strategic factor in product design and development. Hear how scientists provide direct guidance and technical input to help companies and products obtain the Cradle-to-Cradle certification.

  • Legally Speaking: Perspectives in Environmental Law

Students will hear from four Pace University Center for Environmental Legal Studies Law Professors and graduates, followed by questions and answers. This program has been designed to introduce high school students and graduates to the variety of backgrounds and experiences of people taking on climate change, environmental stewardship, and sustainability issues from the legal profession.

  • Green Building Tour

An interesting and educational program designed to introduce students and their families, teachers, and community members to green building concepts and designs. This guided tour is hosted by a LEED-certified professional who will explain greenbuilding's environmental, societal and economic benefits.

SCHOOL ECOLOGICAL FOOTPRINTING PROGRAM: An in-school full-day program conducted by CELF, along with parent volunteers, to teach the concepts of sustainability and humans' impact on earth and provide students with empowering, relevant tools to address global concerns. Students explore their school and interview "experts" in order to formulate the facility's carbon footprint and then learn ways to reduce their impact as a school and a community and at home.
