INTRODUCTION TO SUSTAINABILITY EDUCATION SEMINARS

CELF offers half-day and full-day programs to explore Sustainability Education (SE), learn how it improves student learning and achievement, increases student involvement, and how schools have successfully implemented SE within their existing programs.

ANNUAL CELF SUMMER INSTITUTE FOR SUSTAINABILITY EDUCATION:

July 6-10, 2009, Middle and High School Teachers and Administrators

July 13-15, 2009, Elementary School Teachers

Co-sponsored by Manhattanville College   

  • CELF 2009 Summer Institute for Sustainability Education: an intensive collaborative learning experience designed to build a community of K-12 educators who are sustainability education leaders and practioners.
  • Institute strands for grades K-5, 6-8 and 9-12. Educators will work specifically on integrating sustainability content and themes into existing math, social studies, science and ELA curriculum.
  • Middle and High School Presenters: Susan Santone, Director of Creative Change Educational Solutions; Scott Beall, Director of Integral Learning Systems; Melissa Billings, Chappaqua School District Elementary School teacher, district trainer and Science 21 designer for Putnam/Northern Westchester BOCES; as well as content experts from related fields such as:
    • Green building and renewable energy
    • Green mapping (applying GIS technology to sustainability analyses)
  • Elementary School Presenter: Jen Cirillo, Director of Professional Development at Shelburne Farms
  • Program evaluation continues throughout the year to focus on the Institute's impacts on student achievement and teachers' professional growth. Stipends for participation in program assessment are available.
  • 2009 Institute: co-sponsored and hosted by Manhattanville College - School of Education, at its Purchase, NY campus.
  • Course eligibility: 2 in-service credits OR 3 graduate school credits (MS/HS Workshop), 2 graduate school credits (Elementary Workshop).

SCHOOL CELF EVALUATION:

  • Sustainable School Coordination Program - LEED-certified schools and others seeking to achieve high green building standards learn how to turn their facility into a place-based learning model. Curricular tie-ins provide students and faculty an understanding of and connection to the green attributes of their school.
  • World Cafe - An in-school forum where participants gather to discuss ideas, clarify the context, explore questions that matter, connect diverse perspectives, encourage each person’s contribution, listen together for patterns, insights and deeper questions, and share collective discoveries.

ANNUAL STUDENTS FOR A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE EXPO:         [EXPO site]

Thursday, April 23, 2009 at Pace University, Pleasantville, New York

  • Features participating corporations' creative and innovative sustainable and ecological practices. The goal of the EXPO is to ignite student interest in studying and pursuing career paths that promote a sustainable future.
  • Showcases student work in related areas of study
  • Exposes whole communities to a variety of green practices and leaders across fields of sustainable development.

SCHOOL ECOLOGICAL FOOTPRINTING PROGRAM: An in-school full-day program conducted by CELF, along with parent volunteers, to teach the concepts of sustainability and humans' impact on earth and provide students with empowering, relevant tools to address global concerns. Students explore their school and interview "experts" in order to formulate the facility's carbon footprint and then learn ways to reduce their impact as a school and a community and at home.

LEARNING WITH LEADERS PROGRAM: An annual speaker series for
students and teachers to explore a variety of topics with experts from across industry and government; FREE of charge and OPEN REGISTRATION for 8th-12th grade students and all teachers. Locations vary throughout the series to encourage participation from across the Tri-State region.

  • Legally Speaking: Perspectives in Environmental Law

           Pace University Center for Environmental Legal Studies - Program goal: to introduce

           high school students and graduates to the variety of backgrounds and experiences of

           people taking on climate change, environmental stewardship, and sustainability

           issues from the legal profession.

  • Green Building Tour

           A guided tour hosted by a LEED-certified professional who will explain green

           building's environmental, societal and economic benefits.
