Sustainability is more than a catchword – it is a new kind of thinking, a way to pursue environmental stewardship, economic security and social equity as complementary goals. Education that incorporates these principles is called sustainability education.
The nations of the world, through the United Nations General Assembly, unanimously adopted a resolution in March 2005 establishing 2005 – 2014 as the “Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (DESD).”

CELF, as a member of the U.S. Partnership for the DESD, is dedicated to bringing this global vision to a national and local scale, integrating the principles of sustainability education into K-12 education.

SE offers an integrative opportunity to enhance existing curricula and help top performing schools stay ahead of the curve and improve student learning.

SE offers a dynamic model that children learn to understand early, and that they’ll grow with. It helps educators, and in turn, students, understand ecological, economic and social systems at the local, national and global levels and is based on inquiry, critical analysis and the presentation of a variety of perspectives.

SE is a global movement, with initiatives underway from Europe to Asia.

SE is also a domestic movement, with established programs across the country from coast to coast.   The state of Vermont has become the first state to have written sustainability into its state educational standards for pre-K-12. For details, CLICK HERE:

There are a number of school systems in the U.S. who are working with SE organizations to incorporate the concepts of SE. During the course of our research, CELF has identified and consulted with numerous expert SE organizations that work with schools across the U.S.
